Nice Little CB!
By Arthur J. Heller
I drive a weekly commute of around 180 miles each way, often at early morning hours, and have often thought about installing a CB to hear the trucking traffic all around me, but never had a real reason to until recently when I was going to be embarking on a fishing trip off in the woods with others who had CBs installed. So I bit the bullet and got this little unit. Installation was simple, though it could have used more wire (I lucked out; the previous owner had had an amp in the back of the Jeep and left the wiring, so I just used that). Everyone that has seen it has commented on how good it looks in the truck, and how it looks like standard equipment.

Coupled with a cheap Roadpro 36inch Magnet Mount CB Antenna Kit With Spring 17feet Coax Cable Base Loaded RP-707, I've been getting great reception while on the road, and every radio check I've done it has been commented how I'm "coming in real good". During my recent fishing trip, my buddy, using a circa-1979 emergency portable CB, could hear me almost three miles away, through woods and mountains.

They say that if you have $100 to spend on a CB, spend $20 of it on the CB and $80 on the antenna. If that's the case, you can't go wrong with this little radio.

A great CB for someone who doesn't really need a CB...

I'm a ham, so it's not like I don't already have an antenna or three already, but several times a year I do a 22-hour drive from the Dallas, TX area to the Baltimore, MD area - the airwaves start getting pretty quiet after dark, and by midnight or shortly thereafter they're practically silent. I like a little noise in the car while I'm driving, but it seems I'm forever searching for a radio station on the AM/FM that's not too objectionable, and I've found that conversations on the CB on my touring motorcycle are quite entertaining at times. The Uniden receives very well connected to a slightly retuned 10-meter ham antenna, there are only three controls to worry about (on/off-volume, squelch, and channel 9 button), so I can set the volume and squelch, select channel 19 but leave the channel 9 button in until the silence is intolerable, then pop the channel 9 button out to listen to channel 19. I haven't actually talked on it yet, but I tuned it for minimum SWR at channel 9, so it should work reasonably well across the band. The volume from the built-in speaker is more than adequate in the SUV, and the radio itself takes up so little space and weighs so little that I have many mounting options; at the moment it's on the back of the center console, but should I determine that it might be useful for more than listening, there's space under the dashboard and on the front of the console as well. It's just a really nice little CB for someone who has only occasional need for one.
