Original Whirlpool coupling assembly #285753
By William R. Thorne
Don't buy Whirlpool's new coupler Part #285753A with the steel insert!

Use this coupler and not the newer version Part # 285753A. This latest version coupler has steel inserts imbedded in its 2 plastic sections, the idea
being to make it more reliable. I'm afraid this hasn't been the case in practice, so
avoid this one.

I have two reasons for this. First, they are so tight and hard to drive onto the gearcase
and motor shafts, it's hard to install one without damaging the shafts. And because they
are so tight, removal when they do break can also be very difficult.

Secondly, repairmen have started to see them stripping/rounding off the drive flats on motor
shafts, ruining motors - and that's unacceptable! The idea behind any drive 'weak link'
- belt, coupler, etc - is to slip or sacrificially fail when something goes horribly wrong,
to keep from ruining something more major and expensive.

Having to replace an expensive main drive motor due to a $10 drive coupler failure
tells us there's a major problem with this new coupler design with the metal insert. Continue to use Part #285753 which Amazon sells for a few cents more.

Does the job - but requires extra work. Product picture is inaccurate.
By Claudiu A. Stan
The coupler I got is the newer type that has a metal insert around the center hole, and the rubber part is red not black. The product picture depicts the older type of coupler.

The newer type should be better because of the metal insert - the all-plastic part in the older type was too weak and failed. There is one issue wth the new type though: the metal insert has extra material that I had to file off in order to make it fit the shafts of the motor and of the gearbox.

Perfect

This is the All Plastic OEM style coupler, trust me you don't want the metal sleeved coupler
I'd much rather replace this part 20 times for $5 than to have to replace the Motor $$$$
The metal sleeve versions when they fail can strip the motor drive shaft requiring motor replacement/repair
whereas when the plastic fails, it just breaks and you get a new one for $5

Depending on the instructions you find(this comes with none) this coupler is a tight fit(GOOD) and requires you
to press or tap it onto the shafts, what I did was take the 3 pieces apart and press each white piece on to the shafts
then during installation put the rubber(black) piece on one side and line it up. and done.

It takes longer to move the washing machine away from the wall than it does to do this repair.
