A phenominal bargain
By W. Wiencke
Terrific price for five really substantial relays and sockets -- even with shipping it comes out to around $3 per relay and socket.

The relays are SPDT (single pole double throw) so you can use them to open or close a circuit -- or go from bright to dim on your headlights.

The 1 foot long leads are 16 gauge. The contact colors are Yellow (common), Red (normally closed), and Blue (normally open. The coil is between Black and White. Presumably, White is positive.

The socket, relay and tab have a mounted footprint of about 2 3/4" by 1 1/16". The metal tab is removable leaving a compact 2" x 1 1/16" x 1 1/4" unit.

No attempt is made to waterproof the socket, but the hefty relay itself is tightly potted and sealed -- all-in-all a solid looking 12V relay that has the kind of heft that suggests it's well made.

The only clear negative I can spot is that the leads are good for only about 222F -- I'd have preferred something a tad more heat resistant.

I also don't know how grease and oil resistant the leads are.

One thing that baffles me is the "30A/40A" rating. It would seem like it should be one or the other unless the manufacturer means something like 30A inductive load (fans, motors, solenoids and fuel pumps) and 40A resistive (lights or seat & window warmers) load. It would be real helpful if the vendor would clear this up.

Oh yes, I ordered a half dozen items from 3 or 4 different vendors including Amazon. The relays arrived first (at Washington DC by snail mail). So kudos for fast shipping!

good for the price
By dylan
First of all the bad reviews don't make sense to me. If you need a replacement relay BUY a bosch replacement relay. These are for extra wiring on vehicles for lights and such. And the other person, of course the wiring and crimps are cheap. I wouldn't dare run 40 amps using the supplied 16 gauge wiring that's stupid. If you are running high amperage stuff use a good relay and wiring so you don't burn your car to the ground. Oh and don't use scotch-locks they are hack.

Anyways, the relays are cheap, the connectors are cheap, and the wires are cheap. BUT, they will work fine for what I need them for.

wiring should be changed
By obmohn
These will work fine as delivered, but note that the wiring layout is as follows:
85 - RED
86 - YELLOW
87 - BLUE
87a - WHITE
30 - BLACK

When installing as-is, RED goes to GROUND, YELLOW wire goes to your switch, BLACK goes to Battery (w/fuse, of course), BLUE to your accessory, WHITE is if you have something that is dual-mode but typically left unused.

To wire appropriately and minimize confusion later in life, the RED and BLACK wires really should be swapped in the relay connector housing so 85 is BLACK and 30 is RED. BLACK would then be to GROUND and RED would be POWER IN from Battery..as is standard for electrical wiring.

Easy enough to change, but they should have been set up properly to start with.
