Product Description
Here's how it works: two specially engineered components - the Steelie Magnetic Phone Socket and Steelie Ball Mount - are backed with 3M VHB foam adhesive tape, to provide secure-yet-versatile phone docking exactly where you need it. The Steelie Magnetic Phone Socket Component is a strong, machined aluminum base containing a powerful, circular magnet centered with flexible silicon that attaches to the center of the back of your phone or hard case. The Steelie Ball Mount Component also features a machined aluminum base topped with a steel ball that can be attached anywhere on your dashboard. The two connect magnetically, and, once your phone is in place, keep it securely positioned, even if you accidentally hit that speed bump a little faster than you intended. The Steelie Magnetic Phone Socket's silicon center creates a smooth glide and firm grip, so you can easily rotate the phone from landscape to portrait position and it stays that way until you turn it again. And, because of its fumble-free design, unlike other phone holders, the Nite Ize Steelie Car Mount Kit is legal in all 50 United States. Here's an added bonus: when you've reached your destination and you detach your phone from the Ball Mount, the Magnetic Phone Socket still works with any other convenient metal surface. So you can attach your phone to refrigerator doors, metal shelving, filing cabinets, toolbox tops, even grocery cart handles-and keep it usable, secure, and easy to view throughout your day. The Steelie Magnetic Phone Socket contains a strong magnet. These magnets will NOT damage your tablet or phone. However, do not place new magnetically sensitive objects such as credit cards, pacemakers or computer hard drives. Steelie assumes no liability for damage to such objects.

Fantastic little mount
By Taylor22
This mount is creative, innovative, and effective. I have one in my truck and it is fantastic!
Easy to attach, and use.
One pro tip...if you're going to have your phone in landscape mode with the charging cable attached, balance your phone between your fingers to find the sweet spot.
One Dummy tip....keep the magnet away from your credit cards because....you'll find out.

Great Idea, not ideal for all situations
By Ohmagic
Let me caveat by saying that I was, at first, attempting to mount at an angle as the box display shows. I then tried on the horizontal surface. However, the combined weight of the phone and/or the steelie itself was too much for the adhesive on my late silverado dash. YMMV
This product should have a disclaimer for people who live in the south. The adhesive holds up very poorly in summer heat conditions. The instructions stipulate wanting you to install at room temperature, which I did. However, when I called technical support, they advised that I should attempt to install at 60 degrees or lower (this was in August). The suggested that I drive around with the AC blasting until it was cold inside and then repeat the installation with the AC on and then keep it on for as long as I was willing to. Even though that is a fairly far fetched scenario and not even close to what the instructions say, I thought I would humor them. I asked for an adhesive replacement kit to try their new, unpublished instructions. They said no.
As I readied to return the product to Amazon, I thought I would use their webpage to see if I could get better support. I wrote asking how I could possibly know about their unpublished instructions before I tried the installation at room temperature and why I should have to pay the $10 for the adhesive kit that is only sold on their website (recent addition). This rep agreed, said the telephone rep (which she talked to) had misunderstood me and they sent me the kit under warranty. This was by far my most positive portion of this product.
I attempted again with the new adhesive strips and it did not work. As stated earlier, I tried additional positions. I even tried buying 25 lb scotch industrial exterior adhesive tape, and it did not work any better.
I believe this is a well made, well thought out product, but it will not work for all applications. I applaud Nite Ize (who recently purchased this product) for their eventual customer support and the fact that they acknowledged there were more problems in the summer heat than had been reported in the winter/spring.
The magnet is super strong, and if they came up with a vent solution, I would probably be quick to adopt it. If there was an ounce of metal on my dash, it would also be great, but of course it is 100% plastic.

The best mounting solution I've ever come across
By G. Williams
I recently bought a piece of equipment that had a digital control head that I wanted to mount on my dash. The control head was a bit heavier than any smartphone I've seen. I didn't want to screw it in and there wasn't a good space that fit the mount in any case. I found the Steelie and it turned out to work extremely well. Even better, it looks very good on the dash by itself when I don't mount the control head on it.
Unfortunately, about a week after I mounted it, the car was totaled in an accident. I removed the mount with some dental floss, which is in the directions and works quite well. I ordered the remount kit from the manufacturer and found it contained 2 replacement mounts, not just one. I remounted in the new car easily.
The strength of the mount is easily sufficient to hold smartphones and control heads and there is very little movement as I drive. One tip - the magnet mounted on the phone should be mounted in the center of mass, especially from side to side. If it's off-center the phone will lean and turn to the side with more weight. Another tip - put the magnet on the phone first, then put it on the ball mount - don't mount the ball mount! With the phone attached, hold the mount onto the dash where you are thinking of mounting it with all cords attached. I found that the initial place I was thinking of mounting did not work because of the way the cords would fit and reach. Try it in a few different places before you actually do the mounting.
